Tech and sleep don't have to be mutually exclusive.

By most accounts, technology?. Even tools meant to help us sleep better can?. But sleep and tech don't have to be mutually exclusive. Artists and researchers from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University have created a virtual reality tool to induce sleep. The device,?, combines ambient music controlled by artists with kaleidoscopic visuals controlled by the user's brainwaves, via EEG.

Inter-Dream assigns different colors and properties to different brainwaves, and since brainwaves are always changing, the visuals and colors change, too. The result is a constantly moving, mirage of colors, shapes and patterns. More active brainwaves are associated with more active displays. The idea is that people whose minds are more active just before bed have a harder time falling asleep. By providing vibrant visuals of users' brainwaves, Inter-Dream lulls people to sleep and helps them learn to calm their minds. It uses principles of neurofeedback, using real-time displays of brain activity to teach users how to regulate their mental states.

Inter-Dream was first conceived as a public art project by PluginHUMAN -- a partnership between Dr. Betty Sargeant and Justin Dwyer. But it peaked the interest of PhD researcher Nathan Semertzidis, from RMIT University's Exertion Games Lab. Semertzidis took a deep dive into the science behind Inter-Dream's ability to improve sleep. He found that participants in an RMIT University study reported a 21 percent drop in negative emotions and a 55 percent drop in feelings of fear after using Inter-Dream. Their positive emotions increased eight percent and their feelings of serenity jumped 13 percent. Theoretically, those changes would all lead to improved sleep.

Creative activities and??have also been shown to improve pre-sleep cognitive states and improve rest. But some will undoubtedly find it easier and more appealing to strap on a VR headset and let their brainwaves guide them, through a world of color and light, to a state of relaxation. Semertzidis says more testing is needed before a tool like Inter-Dream could be deployed, but at the very least, it's evidence that in some cases, tech can actually help us sleep.

siri-kit

?has joined the dubious company of Google and Amazon in?, confirming the practice to The Guardian after a whistleblower brought it to the outlet. The person said that Siri queries are routinely sent to human listeners for closer analysis, something not disclosed in Apple’s privacy policy.

The recordings are reportedly not associated with an Apple ID, but can be several seconds long, include content of a personal nature and are paired with other revealing data, like location, app data and contact details.

Like the other companies, Apple says this data is collected and analyzed by humans to improve its services, and that all analysis is done in a secure facility by workers bound by confidentiality agreements. And like the other companies, Apple failed to say that it does this until forced to.

Apple told The Guardian that less than 1% of daily queries are sent, cold comfort when the company is also constantly talking up the volume of??queries. Hundreds of millions of devices use the feature regularly, making a conservative estimate of a fraction of 1% rise quickly into the hundreds of thousands.

This “small portion” of Siri requests is apparently randomly chosen, and as the whistleblower notes, it includes “countless instances of recordings featuring private discussions between doctors and patients, business deals, seemingly criminal dealings, sexual encounters and so on.”

Some of these activations of Siri will have been accidental, which is one of the things listeners are trained to listen for and identify. Accidentally recorded queries can be many seconds long and contain a great deal of personal information, even if it is not directly tied to a digital identity.

Only in the last month has it come out that Google likewise?, and that Amazon, which we knew recorded Alexa queries,?.

Apple’s??states regarding non-personal information (under which Siri queries would fall):

We may collect and store details of how you use our services, including search queries. This information may be used to improve the relevancy of results provided by our services. Except in limited instances to ensure quality of our services over the Internet, such information will not be associated with your IP address.

It’s conceivable that the phrase “search queries” is inclusive of?recordings?of search queries. And it does say that it shares some data with third parties. But nowhere is it stated simply that questions you ask your phone may be recorded and shared with a stranger. Nor is there any way for users to opt out of this practice.

Given Apple’s focus on privacy and transparency, this seems like a major, and obviously a deliberate, oversight. I’ve contacted Apple for more details and will update this post when I hear back.

Participants in the trial had no central vision prior to the microchips being implanted. One year after the chips were implanted, the majority have regained the ability to read to some extent. Some can read only individual letters, while others are able to read sequences of letters. The image created by the implant is just 378 pixels in total. While this is far from restoring a person’s vision to 20/20, it nonetheless represents a significant improvement.

The hope is that it could be used to treat patients with eye conditions such as macular degeneration, which cannot currently be reversed. Macular degeneration affects the area of the retina that is responsible for the central part of a person’s vision. As a result, people with extreme cases of macular degeneration can have the middle part of their frame of vision either severely blurred or entirely dark. Pixium Vision’s implant could also potentially be used to treat retinitis pigmentosa. This group of genetic conditions results in the progressive loss of photoreceptors in the eye. The technology can not be used for people who were born blind. That’s because it requires a fully developed optic nerve.

The current U.S. trials are taking place in Pittsburgh and Miami. Another, larger-scale study is planned to be carried out in Europe in 2020.

This isn’t the only smart technology being tested out for blind patients at the moment. Researchers at Houston’s Baylor College of Medicine are?, which works in a similar way. It has already resulted in partial sight being restored to six participants in an experimental study.

Is your LinkedIn company page optimized for engagement?

While much of the engagement on LinkedIn takes place on a personal level, don’t overlook the potential of your business’s LinkedIn page.

Your company page can serve as a valuable channel to communicate and engage with your community - plus, new features for company pages are always being released, helping to make them an even more useful tool in your social media marketing arsenal.

If you're not sure how to make the most of your page, these tips will help - I've collected a listing of key steps that every brand should take to make sure its LinkedIn page is ready to engage.

1. Ensure the accuracy of your profile information

The first key note is that both LinkedIn profile and page content is??on the platform, and users both within and outside the LinkedIn platform may find your company’s listing as a result of the terms you use.

Given this, you need to ensure that the information about your company is both up-to-date and accurate.

Add your company’s website URL, phone number, and information using the various fields available.

2. Personalize your LinkedIn Page URL

All company pages and profiles are given a standard-issue LinkedIn URL, but you can also create a customized link for both - and it's worth doing.

This can be a great way to spruce up your LinkedIn presence. Making the change is easy and just takes a few clicks.

Editing your LinkedIn URL

There are a few??to keep in mind if you decide to change your public URL. You can only change the link once every thirty days, for example,?and any dropped URLs may be made available for others to claim after 365 days (this abandonment rule doesn’t apply to your primary URL which contains your profile’s unique identification number.)

Also, don’t be concerned about losing traffic that might be directed to your old URL -?creating a vanity URL for your page won’t?.

3. Serve up some specialties to feed LinkedIn’s algorithm

The specialties section of your company’s LinkedIn page presents an opportunity to communicate your business’s core strengths in an easily scannable format.

The specialties you list on your LinkedIn page are also searchable, so use the specialties section to??that will help LinkedIn direct the right traffic to your page. You can change or add specialties to your page by selecting the 'Overview'?tab in edit mode.

4. Update your images

If you haven't updated your profile’s background image, this is opportunity you're missing.

It’s your place, make it your own. Customize your company page by adding a quality image of your logo, and a distinctive banner or cover photo.

Get creative - you can even?into your banner image to further engage visitors.

5. Make every character count in your headline

Appearing immediately under your company’s name, your page headline is prime real estate when it comes to communicating your brand message. For both personal and company profile pages, your headline needs to grab readers’ attention, and make them want to stick around.

LinkedIn profile headlines are limited to 120 characters so you may have to be creative when crafting one for your company. Once you’ve chosen your copy, you should also?test its appearance using a mobile device?to make sure it looks the way you planned.

6. Optimize your page content for both humans and search

Because web searchers may find your LinkedIn page when researching your brand via Google, you should consider your LinkedIn company page as a central location where people can?.

Create both an overview and accompanying page content which tells your business’s story in a compelling way -?paying particular attention to the first few lines of your company’s overview as this is the content that will be visible to users across devices.

And again, to improve your page’s search visibility,?.

7. Appeal to market segments with Showcase Pages

Once you have a company page, you can also create Showcase Pages which highlight different aspects of your brand or company culture. You can use these specialty pages to curate content on a single topic, create a learning center, promote a new product or even highlight your team’s accomplishments.?

Creating this type of niche content is another way to?help your company get discovered.

8. Give your favorite groups a spotlight

LinkedIn groups are another engagement tool available to companies and individuals on the platform. When LinkedIn members join a group, they become?. This enables them to bypass LInkedIn’s limitations on seeing people outside their network.

If your business owns a group, or your team members are active in a group owned by someone else, you can use the 'Featured Groups'?section of your business profile to let other LinkedIn members know where they can connect with your people.

9. Engage as a company by joining communities

A recent addition to LinkedIn’s lineup of features for entities is the ability to follow topic-based communities on the platform.

Each business can choose up to three communities by selecting the relevant hashtags.

Selecting communities to follow enables your company to view and comment on updates bearing the related hashtag,?while LinkedIn will send you notifications when a topic is trending in your community so you can join the conversation.

And while you can only select three communities to join, you can change your selections at any time. Try out a few to see which hashtag categories work best for you.

10. Be on the lookout for new features

As noted, LinkedIn is always adding features, and has been doing so at a faster pace than ever in the past few months.

For example, one, short-lived feature the platform tested earlier this year allowed company page admins to “” by inviting personal connections to follow their company LinkedIn page.?

Understandably, the feature was removed - but while this feature came and went in a flash, it's worth keeping an eye out for similar experiments as LinkedIn continues to search for ways to support company-level engagement.

Ready, set, engage

Your LinkedIn page is the perfect base from which to launch your brand’s LinkedIn engagement campaigns. You can’t do everything??on LinkedIn that you can with your personal profile - for example, you can’t send connection requests or personal messages from your company page and you can’t publish on LinkedIn Publisher (f.k.a. Pulse). But as LinkedIn continues to add new features to company pages, these limitations may change.

With your company page optimized, you’ll be ready to begin publishing updates, following and commenting on others’ posts and analyzing the outcomes of your efforts.

google home mini

?announced this morning?that it has partnered with the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation to give away 100,000 Home Mini units to people living with paralysis. The news is designed to mark the 29th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which was signed into law on this day in 1990.

There’s??for people who qualify and their caregivers. Interested parties must live in the United States to receive a unit.

The giveaway is a nice reminder of one of the under recognized aspects of the current push toward voice-control devices. The ability to check the news and turn on connected smart home devices is a nice luxury for able bodied users, but could be a game changer for others.

The company marked the news with the story of Garrison Redd, a Foundation ambassador who notes the benefit the $50 device has had on his life. “I’m training for the 2020 Paralympic Games as a powerlifter for Team USA, so I use my Mini to set alarms, manage my training schedule, and even make grocery lists,” he writes in the post. “Music is a huge motivator for me, and with Mini, I listen to Spotify playlists and get pumped up before a workout.”

In the meantime, we’re left having to contort our jaws in a desperate effort to blow air onto our faces, or flap our shirts manically in the absurd belief that it’s actually going to make any difference.

But fear not. Sony is apparently on the case. It’s been working on the Reon Pocket air conditioner, a device that it says can be worn discreetly on your back to keep you cool in hot weather, and warm in winter.

Smaller than a smartphone, the miniature air conditioner slots into an inside pocket in a specially made undershirt and cools the wearer using a Peltier element usually used in cars and wine coolers. Its battery can last for 90 minutes, and needs two hours to fully recharge.

The Reon Pocket connects to a smartphone app, which the wearer uses to control the temperature as they go about their day. Or at least, 90 minutes of it.

While it won’t keep your face cool in direct sunlight, keeping the rest of your body cool under your top could make a real difference for those sensitive to hot and sticky weather conditions. Similarly, it will also come in handy when you have to head outside on bitterly cold winter days.

The Reon Pocket is the latest product to emerge from First Flight, a crowdfunding platform?. First Flight lets workers at the tech company suggest slightly more??— like the Reon Pocket — before putting the most interesting ones on its funding site to gauge interest among potential customers.

It’s certainly looking good for the Reon Pocket as in just a few days it has so far?raised more than $275,000?from around 1,800 backers.

Sony is aiming to launch the Reon Pocket in 2020, hopefully in time for the Tokyo Olympics, which, if past Japanese summers are anything to go by, is set to be a very sweaty one for visitors and athletes alike. Indeed, you may need to place several of these devices around your body to have any hope of coping with the oppressive heat and humidity.

The Reon Pocket comes with an undershirt and is expected to sell for around $130. It’s currently listed as a Japan-only product, but if it proves a hit, Sony could be tempted to expand sales of the device to overseas markets, too.

If you simply can’t wait for the Reon Pocket to arrive, check out the?.
